The sense of inevitability that seemed to surround the question of a new war against Iraq has receded as the violence between Israel and the Palestinians has demanded more and more American attention. But even if a U.S. conflict with Saddam Hussein has been postponed, senior military officials tell NBC News that the Iraqi leader cannot possibly be unaware of the massive military preparations now under way.

These senior military officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, say that several U.S. movements of men and materiel into the Persian Gulf are so open that Iraqi intelligence must have picked up what is going on even if the news media has not.Full Story...
